Are you just learning the pinyin, or are you trying to learn the writing as well?

Hi Luke,
Currently I am just trying to learn how to talk.
I know my Mandarin lessons here are a little crappy compared to some other really good sites out there, but what I put here mostly serves as notes to myself. I find that I retain more vocabulary if I take the time to write down the pinyin rather than just relying on rote memory routines.
So far, I must admit, my progress sucks.

Don’t worry, so does mine! But progress does get made, and I find you surprise yourself at how much you can retain. I have spent nearly a year trying to learn how to speak and understand Mandarin, and its painful.
I have recently started on the characters and have 37 characters under my belt, only another 1,963 characters to go until I can read a newspaper!

Luke,
I have been trying to learn for about a year now as well. But I have to say that I don’t put nearly as much effort into it as I should. With work & life, there is little time/energy left over for learning a new language. But, things for me will hopefully be calming down soon so hopefully I will have more time.
As far as characters go, I think I know about 5. But I can’t write them to save my life. Even a simple character like “center” is almost impossible for me to write in a way where my phone’s character recognition recognizes it.
